Supported by Copyright Agency, The Lifted Brow & RMIT non/fictionLab Prize for Experimental Non-fiction is an annual writing prize that aims to unearth new, audacious, authentic and/or inauthentic voices from both Australia and the world.
The winner will receive AU$5000 and publication in Issue #39 of The Lifted Brow, which will be available September 2018. Two runners-up will receive AU$500 and an opportunity to discuss publication with the Brow editors.
“Non/fictionLab is an inclusive laboratory for creative practices so the notion of the experimental is something we continually return to and think about. What are the most exciting experiments taking place in non-fiction writing today? This prize is a chance to discover, celebrate and share some of these experiments, from wherever and by whomever!”
– David Carlin, non/fictionLab Co-Director
“Since we launched this prize in 2015, writers have submitted more than a 1000 pieces of experimental non-fiction to us, and we’ve been blown away by the depth, breadth and inventiveness to which writers around the globe are bringing to non-fiction storytelling. If non-fiction is the mode of the modern era, then perhaps experimental non-fiction is the most appropriate to render and dissect the ridiculous world that is whirling all around us.
The ultimate winners so far for each year’s running the prize—Oscar Schwartz, W.J.P. Newnham, and duo Stephanie Guest and Kate Riggs—represent simply a tiny sample of the kinds of work people are making. And we’ve so far had illustrious judges to pick the winning pieces each year, including John D’Agata, Daniel Mallory Ortberg, Rebecca Giggs, Helen Macdonald, Dodie Bellamy, Astrid Lorange, Maria Tumarkin, Claudia La Rocco, Wayne Koestenbaum, Eileen Myles, Leslie Jamison, and Fiona Wright.
Once again for another year we’re proud to partner with non/fictionLab and with the Copyright Agency to make the prize possible. This year’s judges, Nadja Spiegelman, Ander Monson and Ellena Savage, are keenly anticipating their duties, and we can’t wait to read their winners.”
