My discussion will focus on how we might play at being knowledge-makers, but also on two very problematic sentences in the Vgotsky extract. They are these: ‘If play, then, were structured in such a way that there were no imaginary situation, what would remain? The rules would remain.’
I explore the question of how to pay attention in improvised creative practice and show how danced improvisation practices have shown me a way into an embodied harnessing of my attention in improvised cinematography.
Over twelve months, with not quite Swiss precision, I would stand in my front yard, raise my phone in salute to the sun, and record the same small view on Vine. Six seconds. Thirty frames per second.
